Who is our

Head Roaster

about-us-head-roaster

In my previous life of engineering and construction, the wise words of “Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life” often played heavily on my mind. Eventually, I figured that if I’m waking up more often than not, not wanting to go to work, then something needs to change.

In 2012, for me, that change came in the form of taking on an entry level “roastery all-rounder” position at an established coffee roastery in Perth. I packed up my Brisbane office and headed home. I had no idea that the world of coffee was immersive and expansive enough to become a career!

I quickly learned that I knew next to nothing about coffee and that I was in for a shock. The learning curve was steep to say the least. Afterall, my love for coffee and hospitality (and limit of my experience) came entirely from working in cafes and restaurants while studying for my “real job”.

It wasn’t long before my employer noticed that I was spending more time around the coffee roaster than doing what I was employed to do, ie: pack orders and deliver coffee beans.

Thankfully, my initiative landed me a gig at the control panel of the roaster and so commenced what I’ve now realised is my “real job”. And I wouldn’t change it for anything.

I stayed with the company for a further eight years. During that time, I moved away from roasting and into more of a technical services and barista training position, followed by a customer management and operational role.

What started as a small team of five grew into a national venture, supplying the hospitality industry with coffee, tea, alternative milk products along with anything else you could possibly need for running a food service.

Why

1905?

After the region being first explored by Europeans in 1831, the original town of Williams had been built on the Albany side of the river but was subject to flooding. The town was relocated to higher ground on the western side of the bridge, subsequently surveyed in 1905 and is where you’ll find the 1905 Roasting Company.

In days gone by, Williams was an important watering place on the route from Perth to Albany. Today Williams is a picturesque rural town devoted to wool, wheat, oats, hay and of course, coffee.
