Mr Demissie Edema was born in Gurachu Jeldo Kebele in Kercha Woreda of Guji Zone. There, he grew up on his parent’s coffee farm of 117 hectares. Founded by his grandfather before that in traditionally organic principles amongst protected forest to conserve the natural biodiversity of the land.
When it became Demissie’s turn to oversee the family farm 25 years ago, he sought to further improve their post-harvest quality. Washing station, mill and exporting channels were built to best represent, not just his own, but neighbours’ farms, too – all blessed with fertile soil and bountiful forests at soaring altitudes.
Demissie’s team provides quality and conservationist training to a growing community of farmers. Where new locales of exemplary conditions have been identified, new stations have been established to provide the necessary infrastructure and support. These ‘out-growers’ also receive 70% of the exporting business’ profits as second payments to reward the high standards for the group. Proving that specialty coffee production can make a community thrive.
